F-Secure World Map

Filed under: Web Information — Jim @ 10:22 am

Another cool tool!

F-Secure has launched a comprehensive online tool for everybody interested in understanding the world virus situation at a glance. The resource, which was developed for research purposes at F-Secure is now available to the general public.

Visitors to the above addresses will first see the full world map situation but will quickly be able to drill down for information based on a geographical area or country.

Colour representations of infection levels from quiet to epidemic give the viewer an immediate overview of a country or region. Another measure enables the viewer to understand virus alert levels from an overall global perspective.

Related graphs and statistics help users to understand the broader context of the infection based upon time lines ranging from the last hour to the last year as well as a breakdown of the viruses in question.

The “Badware” problem

Filed under: Web Information — Jim @ 7:51 pm

We’ve all seen it happen: you or someone you know has downloaded something from the internet that seemed harmless enough at the time. Next thing you know, the computer has slowed to a crawl. Pop-up advertising starts to appear out of nowhere. Private information gets sent to some company you’ve never heard of. And the worst part? Trying to uninstall the software sometimes makes the problem worse.

Thousands of visitors to StopBadware.org have shared their badware experiences with us since we launched. From their stories, we’ve identified and tested four applications that contain annoying or objectionable behaviors. To find out what we think of Kazaa, MediaPipe, SpyAxe, and Screensaver.com.

Visual Image Search

Filed under: Web Information — Jim @ 7:49 pm

Tiltomo a Visual Search tool that makes it easier to find the images you like. Their approach is to allow free thinking, where search results are influenced by what you see. Their system encourages you to make a broad search and narrow the types of images you like. It’s as simple as searching a keyword, then clicking the image you like. to see more. They feel this way of searching allows you to follow your own creative path, and find images that you might not normally look for.

They have created two separate image databases. These work independently of each other. They are:

1. A 24 hour snapshot of around 140,000 general images that have been uploaded to flickr. These cover a variety of subjects and have many different tags; it’s a great place to test the “Theme” aspect of their search.

2. The Catchy Colors group. It has a large number of images that are visually stunning; it’s a great place to test thier “100% Color / Texture search”.

Stellarium

Filed under: Web Information — Jim @ 1:43 pm

Sourceforge project of the month for May 2006. Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope. It’s designed to be fun to use, even for those who don’t much about astronomy.

I usually don’t have too much time to play, but I love this program.

The Promise of a Wiki

Filed under: Web Information — Jim @ 12:17 pm

A wiki is a website or similar online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively. Imagine how useful it would be to have an online knowledge base that can easily be updated created by key people within your organization. That’s the promise of a wiki — a Web application that “allows users to easily add, remove, or otherwise edit all content, very quickly and easily,” as Wikipedia, perhaps the best-known wiki, puts it. Why not bring the benefits of a wiki to your organization?

MediaWiki is a free software package originally written for Wikipedia but is now run on other projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and many other wikis.

Custom Order Form

Filed under: Web Information — Jim @ 10:41 am

A custom order form can be a very effective tool for any business taking orders by e-mail. A Custom Order Form is one that has the customers contact information and past order history pre-entered on a form that can be stored on the customer?s own computer. That way they can have your order form on their desktop, keeping your contact information right in front of the customer in an easy-to-use form.

I couldn?t believe that for the little effort it took to make this form, the customer would keep MY ORDER FORM on his computer desktop. How likely do you think it was for him to order from one of my competitors?

Pro.Rate?, a professional rating software

Filed under: Web Information — Jim @ 10:18 am

Here’s an interesting idea from Will Bontrager. I have used his software before and have always been pleased with the results.

Pro.Rate?, as the name implies, is professional rating software. It’s also free to use. (The full version with even more features is on the way. That one will require payment.)

Pro.Rate has a near instant feedback mechanism. It allows site visitors to rate an idea or story or product with minimum interruption.

In fact, it’s click and go. No page reload is required.

The major problem with the idea, I’ve found, is letting people know that it really does not interrupt their surfing, that it does not require a page reload, that they can see their rating instantly incorporated into the total, and that they can do a good deed with a quick click and be on their way.
