How much information does Microsoft collect on you?

Groklaw’s Pamela Jones has written a terrific article on the subject.

In her story, Microsoft’s Calling Home Problem: It’s a Matter of Informed Consent, she reports in great detail what she, and other writers, have discovered about the Genuine Advantage programs.

It seems MS is collecting much more information about us than they would like you to know about. I am certain that I don’t trust them to keep my best interests in mind if asked by the government to just hand it over or perhaps worse yet sell it to someone else.

This data will probably never go away and even if they are benign about it now, what about 5, 10, 20 years from now? Maybe it’s time to use a Linux desktop.
