From the Mozilla development center comes the very first lesson in learning Ajax. If you are interested this is a good place to start.
AJAX = Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. AJAX is not a new programming language, but simply a new technique for creating better, faster, and more interactive web applications. AJAX uses JavaScript to send and receive data between a web browser and a web server. The AJAX technique makes web pages more responsive by exchanging data with the web server behind the scenes, instead of reloading an entire web page each time a user makes a change.

Here?s something for some fun on a Friday. (Not responsible if you get caught playing at work)
This is a fun project from Photojojo. I tried it and it works really well.
Take a photograph (a high resolution one) and print it so you can chop it up into post card size parts. You then mail it to the recipient one piece at a time. You can deliver the pieces if you like, but I think the mail is more effective.
I hadn’t even noticed this until I read Aycan Gulez’s post called “Has Your Web Designer Ever Heard of Contrast?”, but it’s true. More and more designers are using different colors for text, mostly some shade of gray.
I agree that having a page that looks good to the visitor at first glance is important, but I think in the long run having a page that can be easily read is the most important.
While almost everyone wants more traffic, is it more important to you for your visitor to stay and read your content and maybe buy something from you or is it better for your site to just look better so your visitors will glance at it, then click on an ad and leave? If that’s the case maybe a bad looking site with good looking ads would work better (that’s probably something I should test).
Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I believe that a site is first and foremost about helping increase your business, which means having your visitors read your content. There’s probably some happy median here, but I believe that it has to tilt toward readability.
I read a very good post on Wordpreneur.com written by Simon Hillier who is a copywriter and Internet marketer based in Sydney, Australia titled “Is Your Website Copy Doing Your Business More Harm than Good?”.
I read the post about what the content on your site says and how it’s presented and thought these are some very good ideas. I then went to his site because I prefer to link directly to a writers content rather than through another site. What I found on his site was several broken links and if this article was on his site I couldn’t find it, so how could I link directly to it?
I’m still going to link to this article on Wordpreneur because I like the information that’s presented there, but the real lesson here is that if you have the best content in the world it will do you no good if people can’t find it. If you are a great copywriter and you have broken links on your site people are probably not going to consider you even if your business has nothing to do with making websites. Your website is a main entrance to your business and if the door doesn’t work why would they buy from you when, on the Internet, the business next door is so close?
Thinking of not voting today?
Here’s a great list of reasons why you should. “Our” government is out of control and we need to take it back. Although lately I’m not convinced that what goes in to the new voting machines is what actually comes out, but that’s another issue which I’m sure you will hear more about.
Since I’m not a very color oriented person I am always looking for help in that regard. My wife is a makeup artist and is very good at it and always is willing to help me out, but I still tend to be not as good as I would like.
So when I find a good resource about it I am always very interested. Mark Boulton has written a very good series of posts called “Five Simple Steps to designing with colour” and I think it’s well worth reading.

Google up “ringtones” and you’ll get tons of sites that will charge you a few bucks per tone. Here is a site that has some free software using that with a few minutes, you can make as many custom ringtones as your heart desires out of any MP3 in your music collection without paying a dime.
Networking can be a very valuable tool for any small business. I have written about this before. If it’s done right it can be the single most economical way to get you new and repeat business.
Networking and word of mouth advertising together are seven times more likely to bring in business than all forms of traditional advertising and direct mail combined. How does it work? More importantly, how can you make it work for your business? Janet Attard of the site “Business Know-How” has written a good post on the subject. I always have said that the most important thing about attending any network event is to be prepared to help unconditionally and help will come back to you proportionately.
Probably the very first thing that you do when setting up a website it to pick a domain name. That is Whatever.com or Whatever.org or Whatever.whatever
What used to be a very simple process is getting harder and harder every day as more and more names are being used up. Because of this there have been several new extensions have been added to .com, .org, .gov, etc. New items like .info and .tv are now available. I feel that most people will use .com for a business address and it is always advisable if you can find a .com name if you can. The main problem is if youhaveuseanamethatistoolong.com. I still assume that people will type your name into their address bar and too much typing or too many dashes are not good and give you visitors too much of an opportunity to mistype and to be sent elsewhere. In that case it may be better to use .biz or one of the other extensions.
There is a good article on Site Pro News about this by Donovan Baldwin. He cover this and mayn other issues.
