In the past I have used OpenOffice.org Impress for page layout, but I downloaded Scribus today.
Scribus is Open Source Desktop Publishing like Pagemaker or Quark.
It’s for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows
First of all it comes from Sourceforge so I trust it right away.
It’s not very big, about 18MB.
and at first glance it seems pretty cool.
When I first install the program, Scribus tells me that I should have Ghostscripts.
Ghostscripts is another free program needed to read .pdf files.
I installed it, but it is not necessary to have Ghostscripts to run Scribus.
The control panel is very nice, it’s easy to set up the document.
The color wheel is an excellent tool.
The calender wizard alone is worth the download
I made a cool 2007 calender in a couple of minutes
I can highly recommend Scribus a FREE Open Source Program.
Here’s something for some fun on a Friday. (Not responsible if you get caught playing at work)
Time Magazine has published the “50 Coolest Websites of 2006″. They cover most all catagories of websites and I can’t disagree with any of their choices (although I would have added my FastDiscontBanners.com).
Surfing them can be a fun way to waste any afternoon.
I have a page on my site with some of my favorite new sites that are showing up on the web. These are not my sites, but they are the kinds of things that I like in a website. There are different reasons that I picked these sites, they all look good, and are clear and easy to use. They don’t use Flash at all or use it only when necessary and never for navigation. The graphics are good, but not overpowering. Sometimes I just like a picture or the name. Some of them are not in english and I still know what they are about.
The newest one is called Verdure Thought. I think it’s just pretty.
It’s a bit hard to read, but very pretty.
Here’s an interesting idea from WebToolKit.info
This drop shadow is done entirely in CSS, there are no images involved.
This could make putting a drop shadow on a block element much easier and cleaner. It’s something that I’m going to use.
I recently wrote a post called “What Should I Write About?” Today I found a new article by Brian Cooper called “What Not To Write About” a very good article that is about what it’s title says.
I am always talking about constantly adding content to your website in order to attract more visitors through the search engines. There are so many things to write about that just knowing where to start can the most important thing.

The newest one is called closedbags. I like the bluespace, the shadows and the rounded corners.
Even though I am not a big fan of Flash there are some times when there is a use for it. It does make great slideshows and animations, but I always caution against using it for menus because the search engines don’t read it well or at all.
So the question is that you want to make a Flash presentation or Flash slideshow for your site, but you don’t have or want to shell out the $699 to buy Flash?
Here’s a solution, Spresent is free Web-based presentations application based on Flash. You can create and edit high-quality Flash presentations online. You can send presentations via e-mail or publish on your web site or blog. You have to sign up for an account, but it’s free.

A Merry Christmas card for you.

With all of the Holiday hustle and bustle I forgot yesterday was Friday (sorry, my bad).
So here’s some Friday Fun on a Saturday
This is my favorite site to get fonts, with over 6500 free fonts you can download to your computer and use for free. These are all totally free TTF fonts made to work with any PC or Windows Operating System. There are no popups or sneaky links to other font sites, just free fonts.
Backing up your data can be a hassle, but there is nothing worse than having something go wrong and losing all of it completely.
Here’s a very good for an easy way to backup your MySQL database from zmanda.com.
It uses all open source software so it is readily available and free.
