Friday Just For Fun Site – Project Gutenberg (Again)

Here’s something for some fun on a Friday. (Not responsible if you get caught playing at work)

I’ve had Project Gutenberg before here three years ago. I don’t usually repeat these posts, but with the new iPad, Android, iPhone, Kindle, Sony Reader (or others) it’s more relevant than ever.

Over 30,000 free high quality ebooks to read. Previously published on paper by bona fide publishers and digitized with with the help of thousands of volunteers. All ebooks can be easily downloaded: Choose between ePub, Mobipocket, HTML and simple text formats.

No fee or registration is required, but if you like it you can help keep them going.

Another Reason I Like Thunderbird3

I wrote a post about how much I like the new Thunderbird email software.
I also like Craigslist.
Craigslist biggest problem is spam.

I discovered that I can now flag bad posts right from Thunderbird’s RSS reader.
It’s no longer required you open up a browser window then have to go back to the email.

Since it’s much easier to flag posts, I do.  I used to let more crap to go by.
I think Thunderbird’s making Craigslist a better place.

Friday Just For Fun Site – Good Video Sites

Here’s something just for some fun on a Friday. (Not responsible if you get caught playing at work)

If you’ve been snowed in all week like me you may have gone through many of your entertainment options. My last Friday Fun post was about streaming video to your TV. Today here’s some good free stuff to watch!

Did you know that there are many movies to watch on YouTube? Well if you didn’t know you do now and you should definitely check them out.

Movies On YouTube

I have spent quite a bit of time watching TED. If you haven’t heard of TED, it’s a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other. Definitely worth checking out.

How To Promote Your Business Using Social Sites

I saw a Craigslist ad that said

Email Blast

I hate those words (and in the headline)
You need to be listening to your customers, not shouting at them.

  • Is your email list opt-in only?
  • Do your customers even know who you are?
  • Can they speak to you?

Instead, be social. It’s easy to open an account at Twitter, facebook or LinkedIn.
You can speak your mind, but be sure to listen to what’s being said by others.

Forget about BLASTING!

NBC Doesn’t Get It

I stream the web to my TV.

I would love to stream the Olympic events and if I could I would watch much too much television next week. Instead they chose to hide their wonderful content. They just don’t understand what to do when what you want it’s not what they want you to want.
Here’s what CNET had to say.

Yet again, NBC’s Olympics strategy is a Web loser

more snow falling – Valentine Recomendations

Another lovely winter day in The Burgh…
I thought I would pass along this recommendation from my friend Lou Marmon.
If you can get out of the house or if you can go to your basement.

Hello,
Here are some ideas for libations to share (and a movie to watch) with someone special on Valentine’s Day.

Here are some red wine suggestions for winter weather including Phelps, Castello di Amorosa, Quivira, Frei Brothers and St. Clement.
While my editor entitled the piece “West Coast” it also includes a few fun Spanish wines called “Tempra Tantrum.”

Hope you enjoy them.

Best wishes,
Lou

My wife, who loves snow, mentioned to me the other day that we didn’t have any snow on the ground in the middle of winter. I told her “Don’t worry it always snows for my birthday”.

I think this will hang around until them.

How I Use Twitter

I don’t go crazy following people on Twitter, just stuff that really interests me. I get most of my news first on Twitter.

I look at new followers. There are many who just follow millions of people just to get followers back.
I don’t feel any obligation to automatically follow back and I block the spammy people. Especially ones without any tweets.
