{"id":2579,"date":"2011-02-03T08:22:05","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T13:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lillicotch.com\/Blog\/?p=2579"},"modified":"2011-02-03T08:26:56","modified_gmt":"2011-02-03T13:26:56","slug":"why-is-homeland-security-seizing-domains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lillicotch.com\/Blog\/why-is-homeland-security-seizing-domains\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is Homeland Security seizing domains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The department of Homeland Security has <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/02\/02\/technology\/sports_streaming\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">taken the domains of several foreign companies<\/a> for no good reason, except maybe that they index sports streams and the SuperBowl is coming up.<\/p>\n<p>I have many problems with this including.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What does this have to do with Homeland Security?<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re only indexing streams. No different than Google<\/li>\n<li>One of the site is legal in Spain (been through their courts)<\/li>\n<li>This is civil. Why is the gov shilling for the media companies?<\/li>\n<li>No due process. As unAmerican as it gets<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As far as I can tell none of these sites are down and are still running under non-US controlled domains (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rojadirecta.ws\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.rojadirecta.ws\/<\/a>) So it&#8217;s mostly a big show on our governments part, but still very scary for any website owner when they can come and take your domain name without any warning or cause.<\/p>\n<p>It may be time to switch to (or at least add) a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20110201\/17584712915\/will-homeland-security-domain-seizures-lead-to-exodus-us-controlled-domains.shtml\">non-US controlled domain name<\/a> for your site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The department of Homeland Security has taken the domains of several foreign companies for no good reason, except maybe that they index sports streams and the SuperBowl is coming up.
