Favorite Site Designs -
I have a page on my site with some of my favorite site designs that are showing up on the web. These are not my sites, but they are the kinds of designs that I like in a website. There are different reasons that I picked these site designs, they all look good and are clear and easy to use. Sometimes I just like a picture or the name. Some of the sites are not in English and I still know what they are about.
The newest one is called Tri-Win Mailing Services.
This site is a mailing service. Any doubt about that from the first glance?
Everything that they do is right there in front of you. Navigation is easy to find and use. I would prefer some sort of hover effect so that visitors know that they are links, I do like that the main navigation is in plain text, though.

The other day I wrote about not using pictures of words in place of real words on your web page. Well, here’s an example of a site where it works well. The site is for a cartoon so you want the text to look cartoonish, but there are alt tags on every image that tells the search engines (and human visitors with images turned off) what the picture is about. This included the navigation, but even with the image rollovers for navigation it uses CSS that search engines can read and not some kind of scripting that is not easy for them to read.

The newest one is called Bird-Malaysia.
I love the main picture. The bird appears to be breaking out of the image. A cool trick.
One look at the rest of the page and you can understand exactly what the site is about. Main site navigation is at the top, right below the header, easy to find and use.
I’m not crazy about the tan text on a brown background. It looks very stylish, but I think is hard to read.
I like that they ask you for your contact information right away. It’s out of the way, but still noticeable.

The newest one is called Fresh Air Home Cleaning.
With a company called Fresh Air you would expect a site that looks clean and bright. That’s what what you get with this site, plenty of white space and great clear pictures of blue skies and flowers. It looks like a “Green” company so using the green colors of their logo throughout works well and if it’s possible to look like Fresh Air, I think this site does.
They only have a few pages and there are links to all of them on the main navigation that are very clear and easy to find. My only comment would be that the links in the body of the page don’t stand out as links. They don’t look like links to begin with and the color change for the hover effect is barely noticeable. They do begin each link with a “»”, but I don’t think that’s enough.
Overall a very nice looking site.

The newest one is called Langkawi Nature, Wildlife and Birding Tours.
I think that you can probably see from just the thumbnail here that that’s what the site looks like. Jungle looking, very green and lush. Nice use of shadows.
The navigation is right below the header and is easy to use.
I like that you see a new first page header picture every time you visit.
It really makes the site seem fresh

The newest one is called Lucy Blackmore.
Lucy is an artist and crafty person living in the Harrogate UK. Her site is a blog and it’s designed in way that lets you know exactly what she’s in to.
The site really shows off her paintings well, which is exactly what it’s purpose is. There are only a couple of links to her site pages and they stand out right at the top. I also like the date and comment tags that look like tabs on the sides, a very nice touch.

The newest one is called Alternative Designs.
This site is very easy to look at and use. There is plenty of whitespace to let the important aspects stand out. I must admit that I would prefer a darker text color. Many designers these days care more about how the page looks rather than how easy it actually is to read. It’s a fine line to walk, but I prefer to weight readability heavier.
Overall this site is simple, easy to use and looks like fun. Exactly what you want in a site selling playground equipment.

The newest one is called Living Bird.
This site is all about birds. You can see that even from my thumbnail. The navigation is clear, easy to find and use.
The large photo of the bird is the primary focus and the site is done in earth tones which fits the theme very well.

The newest one is called Freelance illustrator Richard Deverell.
This site is about as simple a look as you can get. Simple header, plain and clear navigation and black text on a white background.
What I like best about this site is that nothing on the page distracts from a great example of the artist’s work.

The newest one is called Walters & Walters North Carolina Wedding Photographers.
When I first looked at this site I thought here is the kind of site where all you really need for human visitors are slideshows that showcase great work. It’s really some of the nicest wedding photography that I’ve seen. The site has good clear navigation right at the top and a place to sign up for their newsletter right on the first page.
This is a case where having a blog should provide plenty of “spider food” for the search engines to read even though it’s not on your main pages. Written content can be on any page provided that the site’s navigation is designed so that your visitors can easily find their way to the rest of your pages once they’re in.
When I clicked on the blog there was plenty of written content and more great photos, but I saw two problems. The blog wasn’t on their domain and likely because of that it didn’t look like the rest of the site.
Here’s a site that is beautiful to look at, but needs written words for the search engines to read. They do have plenty of words, but it’s posted on the WordPress site not their own. I believe that by combining them they could turn two really good sites into a great one.
They could also post their newsletters on their site to preview for their potential subscribers and for more content. I like to see the kind of thing that I’ll be getting before I subscribe to any newsletter, but overall this site is well worth seeing.
